How is flight time calculated?
We compute the great-circle (straight-line) distance between the two cities, then divide by an average cruise speed of 805 km/h (500 mph). We add about 30 minutes to account for taxi, take-off, climb, descent and landing. The result is an estimate for a direct flight.
Does this include layovers or connections?
No. The estimate is for a non-stop flight. Connecting flights with layovers will take longer — add the connection wait time plus any extra distance flown to reach the hub airport.
Why is the actual flight time different from the estimate?
Real flights are affected by jet-stream tailwinds or headwinds, air-traffic routing, holding patterns and the specific aircraft type. Eastbound flights are often faster than westbound ones because of prevailing winds, so treat this figure as a planning estimate.
Is the flight time the same in both directions?
The distance is identical both ways, but real flight times can differ by 20–60 minutes on long routes because of wind direction. Our estimate gives the same baseline for both directions.
