How is the straight-line distance calculated?
We use the Haversine formula, which computes the shortest path across the surface of the Earth (the great-circle distance) from the latitude and longitude coordinates of the two cities. This is the true geometric distance "as the crow flies", not the road or flight path.
Why is the result different from the driving distance?
Straight-line distance ignores roads, mountains, and bodies of water. Driving distance follows actual road networks and is typically 20–40% longer than the straight-line figure. Use our Drive Distance Calculator if you need a road-trip estimate.
Does the result include nautical miles?
Yes. We display the distance in kilometres, statute miles, and nautical miles simultaneously. One nautical mile equals 1.852 km and is based on one minute of arc of latitude, making it the standard unit for maritime and aviation navigation.
Is the distance the same both ways?
Yes. Great-circle distance is symmetric — the shortest path from A to B is exactly the same length as from B to A. The distance shown is therefore identical regardless of which city you enter first.
