We estimate road distance using straight-line distance × 1.3, then apply a default consumption of 8 litres per 100 km at an average fuel price of €1.60 per litre. These defaults reflect a typical mid-size petrol car in Western Europe. The final fuel figure is distance × (8/100) × 1.60.
Are tolls included in the estimate?
Yes, a toll estimate is included for routes that typically pass through toll corridors — for example motorways in France, Italy, or Spain. Toll amounts are approximate averages and may differ from actual charges, which vary by vehicle class and exact route taken.
Does the calculator account for overnight stays?
For longer drives that exceed a single day of travel (roughly 800 km or more), the estimate includes the cost of one or more overnight stops based on average budget accommodation rates. Shorter trips are calculated as single-day drives with no overnight cost added.
